Environmental Sustainability at Warrigal

At Warrigal, we are committed to a sustainable future. We recognise the importance of reducing our environmental impact, and to demonstrate our dedication, we have prepared an Environmental Sustainability Plan for 2025-2030. This plan will guide our sustainability initiatives over the next five years, in alignment with our broader Towards 2030 Strategic Plan. Key areas of focus will include energy efficiency, greenhouse gas emissions reduction, waste minimisation, increased recycling, water efficiency, renewable energy generation and procurement, and promoting greater staff and residents’ engagement in sustainability.

Our Environmental Initiatives

Our Progress So Far

In recent years, Warrigal’s sustainability initiatives have delivered measurable results in energy use, emissions reductions, operational savings and community outcomes.

These outcomes provide clear evidence that our sustainability practices are driving cost savings, reducing our environmental footprint, and supporting the long-term resilience of Warrigal as a community-owned aged care organisation servicing the Illawarra and beyond.

They reflect our commitment to embedding sustainability across our operations and improving outcomes for customers, staff, and the environment.

Explore the initiatives below.

• Across Warrigal, 21 rooftop solar PV systems now generate approximately 2,308,000 kWh of renewable electricity annually, saving $577,000 per year on energy bills and avoiding approximately 1,600 tonnes of CO2 emissions every year. These savings enable reinvestment in care services

• At Warrigal Stirling, a new 99.44 kW rooftop system saves over $35,000 annually and offsets around 141,496 kWh of grid electricity use

• Heat pumps installed at the Links Seaside Community Village replaced ageing gas boiler systems, reducing carbon emissions by 76% and saving residents on average $800 per household annually

• Energy savings LED lighting upgrades in care homes have saved significant costs in 24/7 operational areas

A full source separation waste and recycling system has been implemented in the past 12 months at Warrigal Central (Oak Flats head office) and Albion Park Rail residential care home, offering colour-coded bins for:

• Mixed or commingle recycling (yellow lid)

• Food organics (green lid)

• Return & Earn (white lid)

• Cardboard and paper (blue lid)

• Batteries and ink cartridges

• Secure Document Destruction (via Flagstaff)

These initiatives will reduce waste to landfill and expand to all Warrigal sites in 2025.

• Over their 3-year ownership period, our five (5) new hybrid fleet vehicles will save $20,000 in fuel costs and reduce Scope 1 emissions by 32 tonnes of carbon, compared to conventional vehicles

• Warrigal Shell Cove apartments offer EV chargers for residents and visitors

• The Op Shop at Warilla has diverted almost 60,000 garments from landfill, supporting the circular economy and meeting community needs for affordable household goods and clothing

• Our 2025 Heating & Cooling guide reached 600 residents, helping them reduce energy use, access rebates, and stay comfortable through seasonal changes

• Since late 2024, Warrigal has donated expired but unopened PPE including plastic gowns, gloves, and face shields to the local TAFE campus for student training purposes.  This diverted items from landfill and supported workforce education.

• A significant portion of our staff have engaged in sustainability training and various environmental initiatives

• Our Sustainability Champions Group has guided the preparation of the Warrigal Environmental Sustainability Plan 2025-2030 and engaged staff across multiple regions

• Our adoption of GreenPower at our new head office, along with behind-the meter daytime solar PV, ensures that 100% of the building’s electricity is sourced from renewables

Warrigal has introduced energy-efficient hot water heat pumps at our Illawarra Community Villages and at our Wollongong Residential Care Home.

These pumps reduce energy costs by providing hot water more efficiently, and where gas systems have been replaced, we’ve also reduced maintenance requirements and carbon emissions.

Warrigal Central in Oak Flats is a prime example of our sustainability efforts. The central administration centre, which opened in early 2025, features 80 kWp of rooftop solar PV panels to offset the building’s daytime power usage.

For any additional energy needs, we’ve ensured that the electricity is sourced from 100% accredited GreenPower, generated from renewable sources like wind farms.

The building is also equipped with comprehensive waste diversion systems, including bins for general waste, mixed recycling, paper recycling and food organics (FOGO), ensuring minimal landfill waste. To further enhance energy efficiency, all lighting is provided by 100% LEDs,  with lighting sensors to optimise energy use.

All of Warrigal’s sites are equipped with solar panels, helping us to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions. To date, we have installed a total of 1554 kilowatts of solar capacity across our homes.

As part of our ongoing commitment, we plan to expand additional solar PV installations to further reduce energy bills and offset daytime electricity usage in our care homes.
