National Volunteer Week

This National Volunteer Week (18 – 24 May 2026), we’re sharing inspiring stories about our outstanding Warrigal volunteers from across NSW and the ACT. Keep reading to learn more about today’s story – our Know Me Dementia Program, impacting the lives of those living with dementia in our Residential Care Homes.
Know Me Dementia Program
Since commencing in 2024, Warrigal’s Know Me Dementia Program has transformed the lives of residents living with dementia through the power of storytelling, connection and volunteer engagement.

Delivered in partnership with researchers from the Australian National University and funded through the Medical Research Future Fund, the program brings together university student volunteers studying psychology, social work and healthcare disciplines to spend meaningful time with residents across Warrigal Hughes, Calwell, Stirling and Queanbeyan.

Throughout over four successful waves of the program, more than 63 volunteers have participated in weekly reminiscence visits with residents, listening to their stories, sharing conversations and capturing treasured memories through beautiful four minute digital life story videos. These videos help staff and allied health professionals better understand the person behind the dementia diagnosis, supporting person centred care.

Throughout the 16 week program, volunteers build genuine connections with residents while gaining invaluable insights into ageing, dementia and the importance of compassionate care. The impact on residents has been significant, with staff observing improvements in mood, social engagement and confidence. One resident who participated began joining activities and meals again, reconnecting with both staff and fellow residents.

The Know Me Program continues to demonstrate the incredible value of intergenerational volunteering and the lasting impact of preserving life stories. From treasured family memories to moments of laughter and reflection, each story captured reminds us that every resident has lived a rich and meaningful life deserving of dignity, respect and connection.

Through the dedication of our volunteers and the strength of this partnership with ANU, the Know Me Program has created vibrant communities where older people feel truly known, loved and connected.
