At Warrigal, we offer an Assistant Care Employee Support Program, designed for students aged 16-25 years who are completing their final years of high school or university, and are interested in a pathway to the health industry while studying. Keep reading to learn more about our ACE Support Employees, and how you can get involved. 

Introduction

The Assistant Care Employee (ACE) Support role provides assistance to residents/customers with non-personal care activities, supporting the delivery of safe and quality care.

Reporting to the Registered Nurse or person-in-charge, the ACEs generally work short afternoon and weekend shifts, with additional hours available during school holidays and study breaks.

Responsibilities

Housekeeping

• Tidy rooms and common areas
• Remove rubbish and replace bags
• Restock linen trolleys and PPE stations
• Clean wheelchairs and mobility aids
• Make unoccupied beds
• Deliver parcels, mail & supplies
• Tidy utilities/storerooms

Meal Support

Prior to meal service

• Assist residents/customers in dining room and bedrooms to prepare for meals
• Clean and adjust dining and over-bed tables as needed
• Hand out any clothing protectors/cloth napkins to residents/customers, where appropriate

During meal service

• Deliver trays to the residents/customer rooms where directed by care staff
• Take meals to the table under direction of care staff, and clear plates between courses
• Handing out and delivering meals
• Clearing dishes from rooms and tables, and assist with kitchen scraping
• Assisting residents to and from meals
• Assist residents/customers with meals, once assessed as competent to feed a dependent resident/customer (*excluding residents/customers at risk of choking, as identified by care managers/RN*).

After meal service

• Collect meal trays from resident/customer rooms when finished and advise care staff if further assistance is needed/if poor food intake is noted
• Clear tables and wipe down
• Collect soiled clothing protectors/cloth napkins for laundry

Resident Lifestyle Support

• Engage in activities with residents, including:
  • Games, puzzles, crafts, reading
  • Music, TV, movies
  • Conversation & companionship
  • Outdoor time
• Assist with FaceTime/phone calls
• Support visitors as required
• Answer call bells (as directed)

Reporting & Other tasks

• Working under the direction of the RN or person-in-charge, and reporting any:
  • Changes in resident condition
  • Concerns or incidents
  • WHS hazards or environmental concerns
• Maintain hand hygiene at all times, including between residents/customers

Training & Experience

This program offers an exciting opportunity for young students to gain hands-on experience and training in aged care, with pathways into Nursing, Allied Health, Administration and Hospitality available also.

All ACE Support employees participate in face-to-face onboarding, ongoing workshops and online modules throughout their employment with Warrigal, and gain future opportunities to grow their career.
