Finding balance & connection through Tai Chi

Our Warrigal Community Village and Residential Care Home residents have been involved in a Tai Chi program, aimed at improving wellbeing.

At Warrigal our team is committed to the wellbeing of our residents across both our Community Villages and Residential Care Homes, creating unique opportunities for older people to maintain their health both physically and mentally.

As part of this commitment, our lifestyle team have developed a 12 week Tai Chi program led by a qualified trainer, welcoming participants of all abilities to move, breathe and connect.

What is Tai Chi?

Tai Chi is a slow, flowing form of movement that combines gentle exercise with mindfulness and breathing techniques. Often described as “meditation in motion,” it’s particularly well-suited to older people because it is low-impact, adaptable, and focuses on balance and coordination.

At our Warrigal sessions, the program is offered as a seated or standing activity, making it accessible to a wide range of mobility levels. With calm music playing and a relaxing atmosphere created by our trainer, Doug, attendees have loved the sessions.

What are the benefits of Tai Chi?

  1. Improved Balance and Fall Prevention

Tai Chi’s controlled, deliberate movements help strengthen muscles and improve stability. This is especially important for older people, as better balance can reduce the risk of falls and support greater independence.

  1. Gentle Physical Activity

Unlike high-impact exercise, Tai Chi is easy on the joints while still promoting flexibility, strength, and mobility. It allows residents to stay active in a safe and enjoyable way, and offers the chance for people with a wide range of physical abilities to participate.

  1. Enhanced Mental Wellbeing

The mindful nature of Tai Chi encourages relaxation and stress reduction. Focusing on breathing and movement can help calm the mind, reduce anxiety, and promote a sense of inner peace.

  1. Cognitive Stimulation

Learning and remembering movement sequences provides light cognitive engagement, helping to keep the mind active and alert.

  1. Social Connection

One of the most valuable benefits is the opportunity to connect. Our group sessions have brought our Warrigal residents and villagers together, fostering friendships, conversation, and a shared sense of achievement.
